Norma
The best of bel canto comes to Rochester, with Bellini’s Norma in January.
Rehearsals for our grand opera production of Norma will begin shortly, and it’ll surely be a performance you won’t want to miss!
Our cast has considerable experience on the major opera stages of the world, and the passion and raw emotions of the story are sure to hit a nerve with many - even if the plot does take place in the year 50 BC!
Stella Zambalis will sing the role of Norma for the first time in her career. She has sung at many of the world’s major houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera and many more.
John Pickle will sing the role of Pollione, Norma’s secret lover and father of her two children. John Pickle's beautiful lyric voice has been heard in both opera and operetta with New York City Opera, Sarasota Opera, Toledo Opera, Shreveport Opera, Ohio Light Opera, and the National Opera Company. He will be making his debut in the role of Pollione in Mercury Opera Rochester ’s production.
Adalgisa will be sung by soprano Mary Elizabeth Williams, who is making a return engagement here following her portrayal as Kate Pinkerton in Butterfly last January.
The role of Oroveso will be sung by bass Malcolm Smith. One of America’s leading basses, Mr. Smith has appeared on the world's major opera stages including, the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, La Scala, Deutsche Opera Berlin, Hamburg Opera, Munich Opera, Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opera Bastille, among many others.
Mercury Opera Rochester's Co-Artistic Director, Benton Hess conducts the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. The stage production is directed by Steven Daigle.
