The Guild of Mercury Opera Rochester
The Guild is a division of Mercury Opera Rochester that provides a variety of support functions for Rochester’s professional opera company. These include educational outreach programs of free opera lectures at local libraries, tours to productions at leading regional opera companies and to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. The Guild also arranges benefit concerts, opera recitals and gala dinners.
A highlight of the Guild’s program is the popular Beat the Blahs Program. Every Sunday afternoon in January, the Guild presents a complete opera production on DVD. These presentations are held in a comfortable and spacious room at Temple B’rith Kodesh in Brighton, using high quality audio-visual equipment. An opera talk by one of our knowledgeable volunteers precedes each presentation and refreshments are served during intermissions.
Another highlight of Mercury’s season organized by the Guild is the annual Donors Recital, held on the third Sunday in May. The recital is presented by some the most talented artists in our community, generally members of the faculty of the Eastman School and their most talented students. The recital is followed by a reception with the artists.
Guild volunteers perform many valuable functions such as preparing the mailings for Mercury Opera Rochester and ushering at the Mercury Opera’s productions. All funds raised by the Guild support Mercury Opera Rochester’s productions.
Donors giving $50 or more to Mercury Opera Rochester have privileged Guild status, allowing them to participate in Guild events for a reduced fee. Please join us in our support for opera in Rochester.
