Tenor Steven Tompkins is making his professional operatic debut with Mercury Opera Rochester with this performance of La Bohème. Mr. Tompkins has recently completed the Master of Music degree in vocal performance and is continuing his opera studies as a member of the select Specialist Program at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor (UMAA), receiving full-tuition scholarships for both degrees.
At UMAA he has performed the leading tenor roles of Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème conducted by Martin Katz, Jenik in The Bartered Bride by Smetana, and Don José in La Tragédie de Carmen by Georges Bizet, adapted by Peter Brook. He has appeared in scenes presentations performing the roles of Curly in Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men and Faust in Boito’s Mephistopheles. He was the tenor soloist in Rossini’s Petite messe solenelle.
In November 2007 he was a semi-finalist in the Czech and Slovak International Vocal Competition held in Green Bay, Wisconsin. A 2004 graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocal Performance, he was soloist with the Roberts Wesleyan College Chorale and Orchestra in Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Bach Cantata No. 21, Schubert’s Mass in G Major, and Haydn’s Creation. On the concert stage he appears regularly on the Essex Summer Concert Series in Essex, NY, and with the Naples Opera Society in Naples, Florida where he also has performed scenes and arias from Massenet’s Werther, Verdi’s Macbeth, and Bizet’s Carmen.
Mr. Tompkins was also the tenor soloist in performances of Handel’s Messiah and the Saint-Saëns Christmas Oratorio with the International Symphony Orchestra. Back to the cast page
