John Pickle, tenor

Tenor John Pickle is increasingly sought after for his “uniquely expressive” voice. He has been engaged by companies including New York City Opera National Company, Nevada Opera, Sarasota Opera, Florentine Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, Toledo Opera, Mercury Opera Rochester, Opera Fort Collins, Opera Idaho and the Boise Philharmonic, Opera Southwest, Shreveport Opera, Bohème Opera of New Jersey, Center City Opera Theater, Opera at Florham, Salt Marsh Opera and Opera de las Américas in Santo Domingo.

John has been successful, and received critical acclaim in roles spanning the tenor repertoire. Appearances have included the following; Rodolfo in La Bohème, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Pollione in Norma, The Duke in Rigoletto, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Gérald in Lakmé, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Camille in The Merry Widow, Pirelli in Sweeney Todd, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Karl Franz in The Student Prince, Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette, Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Pong in Turandot, Judge Danforth in The Crucible, Sam Kaplan in Street Scene, Philippe in The New Moon, and the titular roles in Werther and Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe.

In addition to opera and operetta John has been an active concert soloist. Solo appearances as have included Captain Dick in Naughty Marietta, Lieutenant Karl in Sweethearts with Little Orchestra Society, and with Teatro Grattacielo as Gabriello/Un Cantore in Giordano’s rarely performed La Cena delle Beffe. The later was John’s Alice Tully Hall debut in which the New York Times described his voice as a “liquid tenor”. John was again engaged by Teatro Grattacielo to cover Milio Dufresne in Zazà.

Other concert appearances have included the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey Choral Society, Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, Long Bay Symphony, City Center - Encores!, Acadiana Symphony and Gotham City Baroque Orchestra. Concert repertoire has included Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Bach’s Mass in b-Minor and St. John Passion, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Orff’s Carmina Burana.

John has also been featured on several operetta recordings on the Albany Records and Newport Classic labels. These include Alexius in The Chocolate Soldier by Oscar Straus, Barry O’Day in Eileen, Captain Dick in Naughty Marietta, and Lieutenant Karl in Sweethearts all by Victor Herbert, Radjami in The Bayadere by Emerich Kalman, Schubert in Das Dreimäderlhaus by Franz Schubert and The Duke in A Night in Venice by Johann Strauss.

Future engagements include the Fourth Jew in Salome with Florentine Opera, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with Mercury Opera Rochester, Rodolfo in La Bohème and Sam Kaplan in Street Scene with Nevada Opera, Cavaradossi in Tosca with Opera Southwest and Opera Fort Collins, and the tenor soloist in Mozart’s Requiem and Schubert’s Mass in G with MidAmerica Productions at Carnegie Hall.
