John Pickle, tenor

Tenor John Pickle has performed in opera and operetta with companies including New York City Opera National Company, Nevada Opera, Sarasota Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Toledo Opera, Shreveport Opera, Boheme Opera of New Jersey, Center City Opera Theater in Philadelphia, Opera at Florham, Salt Marsh Opera, Opera de las Américas in Santo Domingo and Ohio Light Opera. Most recently (2/06) he was called in with only five days notice to perform the role of Pinkerton in Madama Buterfly with Opera Southwest. This was his debut in the role and with the company. Other appearances have included the roles of the Duke in Rigoletto, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Gérald in Lakmé, Camille in The Merry Widow, Pirelli in Sweeney Todd, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Karl Franz in The Student Prince, King Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors Pong in Turandot, Judge Danforth in The Crucible, Sam Kaplan in Street Scene, Philippe in The New Moon, and the titular roles in Werther and Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe.

In addition to opera and operetta John has been an active concert soloist. In March 2006, he appeared as Captain Dick in a concert version of Naughty Marietta with Little Orchestra Society at Alice Tully Hall. Other appearances at Alice Tully Hall have included Lieutenant Karl in a concert version of Victor Herbert’s Sweethearts also with Little Orchestra Society, and with Teatro Grattacielo as Gabriello/Un Cantore in Giordano’s rarely performed La Cena delle Beffe. The later was John’s Alice Tully Hall debut in which the New York Times described his voice as a “liquid tenor”.

In 2005, John was again engaged by Teatro Grattacielo to cover Milio Dufresne in Zazà. Other concert appearances have included the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, New Jersey Choral Society, Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, Long Bay Symphony, Gotham City Baroque Orchestra, Greater Trenton Choral Society and Stonington Choral Society. Concert repertoire has included Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Bach’s Mass in b-Minor and St. John Passion, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Orff’s Carmina Burana. John has also appeared in several Opera/ Operetta/ Broadway concerts with City Center - Encores!, Acadiana Symphony and New Vocal Arts Ensemble (NVAE).

John has also been featured on several operetta recordings on the Albany Records and Newport Classic labels. These include Alexius in The Chocolate Soldier by Oscar Straus, Barry O’Day in Eileen, Captain Dick in Naughty Marietta, Lieutenant Karl in Sweethearts all by Victor Herbert, Radjami in The Bayadere by Emerich Kalman, Schubert in Das Dreimäderlhaus by Franz Schubert and The Duke in A Night in Venice by Johann Strauss.

Future and most recent engagements include a concert with Nevada Opera entitled Opera in Blue Jeans, Ferrando in Così fan tutte with Nevada Opera at the Sand Harbor Summer Festival in Lake Tahoe and with Opera on The James, Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette with Grand Rapids Opera, Rodolfo in La Bohème with Opera Southwest, St. Brioche in Merry Widow, and Fourth Jew in Salomé with Florentine Opera and an Opera Gala Concert with Opera Idaho and the Boise Philharmonic.
